What is it for?
Being fluent means knowing how to react and respond in a wide variety of situations. You know that taking part in a dialogue can be a huge challenge. Common frustrations include...
- You don't know what your partner is saying and wish you could slow things down
- You know what your partner is saying, but not how to express your response
- You know what to say, but freeze up
The Dialogue Role Play simulates the experience of being in a real-life [language] conversation—all in a safe environment where you can take the time you need to fully understand what's being said. And you can try out a wide variety of responses until you feel comfortable. Our AI Assistant will diagnose your [language] response and give you actionable feedback you can use to improve.
This is a beta feature
This feature is brand new and we're working closely with learners like you to improve the experience. Expect changes and enhancements to arrive over time as we gather more feedback!
How to use it
When you launch Dialogue Role Play, you'll be asked which character in the dialogue you'd like to play. You can choose a specific character or even choose to play all of them yourself for even more practice. Once you've chosen your character, you will hear the first line in the dialogue read to you in [language] if the first character speaking is different from the one you chose, or you'll be prompted to enter your character's first line in [language] if they're the one that goes first.
In the bottom-most bubble, you can see the English translation of your line. This is your hint. How would you express this line in [language]?
If you know, type your answer at the bottom of the window in the "Your response" area. Then select the Send button or press Enter.
If you don't know how to convey this idea in [language], you can select the eye icon in order to see the correct phrase in [language]. You can then type this into "Your response."
Getting feedback
When you submit your response, then the AI Assistant takes over! It will evaluate your response and give you feedback about your vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. It will also judge how well your response conveys the intended meaning of the line.
If your answer was acceptable, you will be invited to continue to the next line. To get detailed feedback, select the Improve button.
If your answer needs some work, you'll be given feedback about your answer. Here you can see any mistakes you've made and advice about correct usage. You might also be told ways in which the meaning of your [language] differs from the intended meaning. Very useful for learning to get your point across!
Once you have received feedback, you can try another answer by typing it in the box at the bottom, or continue by using the Move On button.
In this way, you'll proceed through the entire dialogue, learning how to take part in it yourself!
Using audio
To better simulate the experience of a real-life conversation, you may prefer to use speech to text tools. We highly recommend the tools that come with modern operating systems for the fastest possible experience.
Read our How Do I Type Non-English Characters? article to learn more about setting up a [language] keyboard on your device, and getting access to the speech to text tools.
We're looking at ways to add additional speech to text tools to this feature soon!
